Why you should watch “the Sopranos”? Shootouts

As said a former FBI agent undercover, Joseph Dominick Pistone (author of the book that was made into a movie “Donnie Brasco”):

“The gangsters — not so nice guys. They’re not even fit this definition. It is violent and often primitive people”.

Tony Soprano is how to be funny, charming and even sympathetic. At the same time he kills people. Sometimes with his own hands. He earns a living.

Probably the most indicative in this respect can be considered the fifth episode of the first season called “College” where Tony goes with her daughter on a journey through various schools of Maine. There at the gas station, he accidentally notices a certain Fabian Petrulio, a former Mafioso and a traitor, hiding here in the witness protection program. Tony takes daughter for an interview, then returned, chasing the Snitch and calmly strangling with wire.

Performing an act of revenge, Tony returns to its status as a “dutiful dad”, taking the Meadow and asking about how she passed the interview. Incidentally, Tony Sirico agreed to play the role of the Poly Guatieri only on the condition that his character will not be in the story, a rat, an informant.

David chase said that such brazen contempt for the main character, whom the audience had for the past episodes of to love, did not cause enthusiasm to the leadership of HBO. Is the anti-hero, who looks like “us”, but it is doing terrible things, can become a star Prime-time? However, the Creator of the show knew that the audience will be inclined to perceive the character of James Gandolfini overly sentimental, so insisted to explain to the audience how Tony Soprano actually:

“I think it’s important to understand… everyone likes the Soprano family, we love Tony Soprano, he’s such a great guy, so funny. They’re all so cute and funny. I believe that you need to be mindful of how things really are. But the reality is different. I’m not sure that these gangsters commit the same crime and murder as we see in the movies about them, but they will not fail to cross the line, to intimidate, to humiliate, to destroy people. So don’t forget that jokes aside, the mafia exists, and this is not a walking joke”.

The viewer is hard to blame the desire to watch the bad deeds of Tony. Especially if that violence is justified story and moral. And not only that, in television series such moments are emphasized and artificially whipped up by the intrigue of the scenario. Just this is what the audience expects from the criminal series. Tony Soprano and his men embody the traits and characteristics which are carefully suppressed in reality, but so attractive on the big screen in the form of entertainment.

Sam Soprano of his behaviour finds an unconditional excuse, because he acts according to the code of omerta. These traditions and values passed to him by inheritance from his father. And, of course, not without “the Godfather.” Imitating Michael Corleone, Tony honors the unwritten rules, though they increasingly lose their usual meaning. Any member of the Corleone family, in the worst case, faced a maximum of five years imprisonment, except for gambling, tax evasion and difficult to prove racketeering to show them there was nothing.

In such circumstances, to remain silent in the framework of omerta was relatively simple. Now, with the advent in 1970 of the Federal RICO act (RICO — The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act) Federal agents became a lot easier to sit in jail a whole mafia family. And not for a couple of years, but for decades. So now the guys from the mafia is sometimes easier to exchange your involvement in the code of silence in a significant reduction of the terms of his release.

The main problem Tony is that he, despite his desire to conform, not Michael Corleone. His father, johnny, was not the godfather. The phrase from the novel by Mario Puzo says:

“Don Corleone was a man to whom everybody came with their problems, and no one has ever left disappointed.”

Times have changed. The Corleone family has built a powerful family business Empire controlled a wise and prudent ruler. Compared to them, the Sopranos is potato skins. Remember, even Hyman Roth, exulting, said, “Michael, we are now more than U. S. Steel”. Tony Soprano and his loyal people even keep a trusted business. Vito and Michael Corleone was near a thoughtful counselor, Consigliere Tom Hagen; the right hand is frivolous Soprano, Silvio Dante, Manager of the strip club “Bada Bing” and is known for his wacky impersonations of al Pacino.

Corleone is the aristocrats of the criminal world, Soprano the audience last series, gavones — so Italian-Americans describe people rude and vulgar.

The tragedy about the configured idealistic young man, who later became a brutal boss and a murderer, has gradually turned into a Comedy about how fat and slutty suburban is trying his best to keep peace in the family and at work.

His mother is not a mother Corleone, loving, taciturn nurse. It’s bitter, rude and quarrelsome woman, who sends his own son assassins in retaliation for what he put her in a nursing home.

Carmela — not Kay Adams Corleone, who had only vague knowledge about the business her blessed. Signora Soprano grew up in the same places that her and Tony, so well know who she’s marrying. On occasion, she is not averse to demonstrate their direct relevance to the mafia.

Ill-mannered offspring Soprano though, and I love my dad, but rarely show it due respect. Rather they oppose him, fighting with the family and sometimes in the face called “Mr. Big mafia Boss”.

But despite his nostalgia for the old times and the traditions of the mafia, Tony Soprano himself, lives for today, with little concern about tomorrow.

“Tony says a lot about the future of his family, about his place in history, but in fact it turns out that he dreams about nothing, says David chase. He wants to be successful, stay afloat and make the most of your family to the maximum. I doubt he seriously thought about what this could lead. He does not say this had not openly recognized. He lives by the principle “After us the deluge””.

The Sopranos” should be viewed primarily not as an entertainment show or a well-written Telesio, and as a cultural phenomenon. Thanks to this show, HBO has considerably expanded its audience at the expense of thousands of new subscribers. Book industry immediately flooded the market with all sorts of publications and publications under names such as “the Sopranos: Cooking recipes”, “Tao Soprano”, “the Psychology of the Sopranos”, “chat with the Sopranos” and even “the Sopranos and philosophy: I kill therefore I live.” Not to mention the fact that there was a separate line of clothing for men bus tours to memorable places in Jersey and CDs with the soundtrack to the film.

The tapes had their own fans, no less ardent than that of a teenage TV series like “Buffy, the vampire Slayer”, and maybe more, given that they stayed true to the characters of “the Sopranos” for 8 years (the first episode was shown in 1999, last — June 10, 2007). Despite the long breaks between seasons (between 4 and 5, and between 5 and 6 seasons, the gap was almost two years) and the weakness of the individual series, especially towards the end of the show.
